Allendale Town, Northumberland.Allendale Town is a village in the South of Northumberland. It is located in the valley of the River East Allen, just under 7 miles from Haydon Bridge and 11 miles from Hexham. Popular with walkers, Allendale has good small shops and a number of pubs / hotels. The area has a history of lead mining and the remains of this industry are scattered around the nearby countryside. Allendale is also known for its New Years Eve "Tar Barrel Ceremony" in which barrels of burning tar are carried through the village to a bonfire. A railway used to exist between Allendale and Hexham. This line closed in the 1950's. Today the village is reached by car or local bus services. The photos may take a while to load depending on your connection speed.
