Photos of Northumberland - Alnwick Town Centre.Alnwick is one of the main tourist destinations in Northumberland. It is located on the River Aln beside the A1, approx. 33 miles by road from Newcastle and 30 miles from Berwick-upon-Tweed. There are a number of attractions in Alnwick but the Town is dominated by the castle - dubbed the "Windsor of the North" and one of the finest in Britain. Other attractions include the Alnwick Garden, Hulme Park and the Town Fair, held annually. There are good shops in the Town Centre which is a pleasant place to shop a weekly market and regular Farmers Markets. Alnwick is a good base for many destinations in North Northumberland and the Coast and has many pubs, hotels and guest houses. There is no longer a rail service to Alnwick, the nearest being at Alnmouth a few miles away on the East Coast Main Line. A private rail consortium is however working to reinstate the branch line from Alnmouth to Alnwick. As well as being right next to the A1 Trunk Road, Alnwick is served by local buses and services from Newcastle, Berwick and Edinburgh. These photos were taken in Alnwick Town Centre, early on a sunny morning in August 2005.
