Churches in Whitfield, Northumberland.

There are two churches at Whitfield in the valley of the River West Allen in the far south of Northumberland.

The imposing Holy Trinity Church with it's large clock tower is a well known sight to motorists travelling to and from Alston, on the roadside close to the river.

The other church is the tiny and much older St. John's Church, which is located out of the valley opposite a small school, on the road that leads to Haltwhistle.

This church in the early English style was founded in 1860. The Blackett-ord family were dedicated patrons and generous benefactors. There is a reredos (decoration) dating from 1891.

St. John's Church, Whitfield.

St. John's was founded in the 11th century and was rebuilt in 1782.

The graveyard has some fine old stones and a coped grave cover thought to be from a Knight-Crusader's grave. There is also an interesting inscription on the window behind the alter.
