Photos of Woodhouses Bastle, near Holystone, Northumberland -A Bastle is a fortified dwelling, common in Northumberland and used to protect the owners during raids by the Scots and Border Reivers. The lower floor was used to house livestock while the owners would take refuge in the upper floor. Woodhouses Bastle near Holystone is a well preserved example of one of these historic dwellings.
