My father was in the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers and was stationed in Haltwhistle. My mother and father were married in the church there. My brother was born there. I went there in 1968 with my parents and they couldn't believe that a person in one of the houses looked out the window and recognized my mother from 1925!!!
At that point in time my mother said everything was just like it was when they lived there. They were very happy in Haltwhistle and I thought it was a beautiful village in beautiful countryside. Maybe one day I shall be able to visit again.

After living in Cumbria for the last 15 years we've just moved back to Tyneside this time to North Shields. Cumbria is bonnie, but you just can't beat Northumberland - God's country.
A superb site showing off the county at its best. Keep it up!

What a super website.
A long gone and distant relation of mine (Caleb Tomes) was lodging at the Brewers Arms, Clayport, Alnwick in 1861, where the inn keeper was Ann Dunn.
Caleb and Ann married in 1866 but poor Caleb died that same year.
Does the Brewers Arms still exist?
This part of the UK appears to be stunningly beautiful and is on my list of places to visit some day.

I just opened this today, what a wonderful suprise to see pictures of Bedlington where I grew up.
Born there, lived on Doctor Terrace, went to the primary school. My father was a coal miner worked at the Station Pit.
I have so many memories of a wonderful childhood. I went to nursing school at Newcastle General some of the most wonderful days of my life.
I left for USA 1962 and I have been back frequently but to see these pictures brought back lovely memories, I wept.
Thankyou so much.

Visited my family town of Elsdon in 2001
What a feeling to share the dust and history in the wonderful church
that my ancesters were married and buried in. I`m still trying to
locate any "Elsdons" from the 1700 to 1850s.
I cant wait to return to the history and dust and a pint at the
"Bird & the Bush"
Cheers and a big thank you for your wonderful hospitality, Jim

I absolutely love your photographs!
I am trying to write a book, set in Northumberland, and am desperately
scheming ways of going on a visit for both research and pleasure.
The views of the castles and churches are so inspiring...
Thank you for creating this site!

The photos are wonderful.
It is great to see towns that our ancestors immigrated from 150
years ago.

Being able to show how amazing and pretty the area is to my family
is great.

Hello, I loved your pictures of Corbridge.
My husband and I were on vacation in Tyne / Wear last week and

We ate lunch at the Angel Inn and I was glad to see that you have
included a photo of the inn.

It's amazing what you find when you are looking for something
else!
I know I live in a beautiful area because I like to look around
and take photos of the places I visit, but there is nothing I have
taken can compare with the clarity and sharpness and colour of these
pictures.
They are excellent - and an inspiration to go visit and explore
some of these sites for myself.
Well done!!!

My dad left BLYTH when he was about 16 as a ten quid tourist (

I still love the accent and the stories of the area ( Cambois as
well ) but nostalgia makes me wish he were still alive and that
we could make the journey back there together.

This is to say that as a native Northumbrian now living in the
Midlands how much I like this site.
The photos are wonderful. How did you find so many sunny days?
One small suggestion. Have you thought of adding OS map references
for walks, particularly for the very rural areas?
You've inspired me to visit/revisit some places when I'm
next up.
Yes, a few people have also asked for this in
our site survey responses, so I'll be adding grid references to
some of the more rural locations - Les Bell, Website Owner

Dear Northumberland Cam,
I showed a beautiful lady from Zimbabwe Rachel Ndandarika the Bedlington
photos of the High Street and the surrounding woods and she also
thought the seaside shot of Holy Island made Northumberland an attractive
place to visit and to meet the very hospitable Northumbrian folk
who welcome all people with good cheer, warmth and humour.

Thank you for these beautiful pictures of my grandmother's
home town, Boulmer, which I had the pleasure of visiting in 1974
with my late mother and my late sister.
I am trying to locate some cousins who may still live in Boulmer
- the Stevenson family (I think it's Stevenson as opposed to
Stephenson?). My grandmother was Edith Stevenson Hay, sister of
Nell Stevenson Dodds of Longhoughton.
If anyone knows the Stevensons in Boulmer, I can be contacted at
(e-mail address removed - see above. Legitimate
replies via Northumberland-cam who will pass them on)
