Photos of Lindisfarne Castle, Holy Island, Northumberland.Lindisfarne Castle was built in the 16th century to defend the Harbour of Holy Island. It was constructed using stone taken from the nearby abandoned Priory. It was only successfully attacked once when it was taken by the Scots in the 18th century. The castle became disused in the 19th century and was restored in the 20th century. Today it is managed by the National Trust and is open to the public.
